Axpo Launches LNG Bunkering in Spain with First MSC Delivery to Meet Rising Demand for Eco-Friendly Maritime Fuels

Axpo has successfully executed its inaugural delivery of liquified natural gas (LNG) to MSC in the port of Málaga, marking a significant milestone in its operations in Spain. This delivery, which involved approximately 2,800 metric tonnes of LNG, has been carried out using Axpo’s chartered small-scale LNG vessel, emphasizing the increasing interest in LNG as a cleaner and more economical alternative to conventional ship fuels. To support its LNG operations in Spain, Axpo has deployed two advanced small-scale LNG vessels, one with a capacity of 7,500 cubic meters and another with 12,500 cubic meters. These vessels are designed to facilitate ship-to-ship fuel transfers, commonly referred to as bunkering.

In addition to bunkering services, Axpo aims to offer small-scale break-bulk deliveries, along with gas up and cool down services, expanding its operational versatility. While the initial operation took place in Málaga, which is a prominent port for commercial maritime traffic, Axpo plans to extend its services to other key Spanish terminals, including Algeciras, Valencia, and Barcelona. This recent delivery also signifies the first ship-to-ship LNG bunkering operation in Málaga and highlights the simultaneous operations (SimOps) by container in Spain, allowing LNG filling to occur concurrently with cargo handling. Spain has emerged as a crucial hub for Axpo’s LNG activities, with the company recently achieving the delivery of 100 LNG cargoes, amounting to a total of 76.07 terawatt hours (TWh) to Europe.

Availing of this new solution aligns with Axpo’s commitment to providing efficient and cost-effective energy alternatives that contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the maritime sector. Domenico de Luca, Axpo’s Head of Trading & Sales, emphasized the importance of LNG bunkering in mitigating environmental impact, while Daniele Corti, Head of small-scale LNG, expressed gratitude for the support from local authorities, which helped secure the operating license and advance Axpo’s energy services in the region.
