ClassNK Grants Approval in Principle for Innovative Ammonia-Powered Carrier by MOL, Namura, and Mitsubishi

ClassNK has granted an approval in principle (AiP) for a large ammonia-powered ammonia carrier, a project developed collaboratively by Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Namura Shipbuilding, and Mitsubishi Shipbuilding. This innovative vessel is designed to transport substantial quantities of ammonia with minimal emissions, signifying its viability from both regulatory and safety angles. The growing interest in ammonia lies in its potential as a zero-carbon fuel, particularly for power generation, since it does not produce CO₂ upon combustion.

This new carrier boasts larger cargo tanks than conventional very large gas carriers (VLGCs) and very large ammonia carriers (VLACs), facilitating a low-emission transport solution. Furthermore, it adheres to Japan’s stringent entry restrictions for major power plants while maintaining compatibility with existing VLGC specifications for connections to power plants and ammonia supply terminals during loading and unloading operations. ClassNK conducted a thorough review of the vessel’s design, referencing the ‘Part C Guidelines for Ships Using Ammonia as Fuel (Edition 3.0.2)’ as well as the IGC Code. The organization focused on the safety implications of ammonia toxicity during a risk assessment process, known as HAZID.

After verifying that all outlined requirements were satisfied, ClassNK proceeded to issue the AiP for the ammonia carrier. This approval marks a significant step towards fostering advanced decarbonization initiatives in the maritime sector. ClassNK remains committed to supporting such developments through comprehensive safety assessments and other related efforts aimed at enhancing sustainability in shipping.
