Lloyd’s Register Endorses Ammonia Dual-Fuel System Design for Trafigura’s New Medium Gas Carriers

Lloyd’s Register (LR) has announced the successful completion of a joint development project focused on designing ammonia dual-fuel systems for Trafigura’s new medium gas carriers (MGCs). This project included a thorough design evaluation and safety assessment, ensuring that the new systems adhere to LR’s rules and international regulations. The implementation of these ammonia dual-fuel systems marks a crucial advancement in expanding the use of low-carbon fuels from specialized vessels to a broader range of ship types. Trafigura is among the pioneers in adopting this technology commercially for MGCs.

In 2024, Trafigura secured a contract with HD Hyundai Mipo (HMD) to construct four MGCs, each with a capacity of 45,000 cubic meters. These vessels will be powered by WinGD ammonia dual-fuel engines and feature Alfa Laval’s Ammonia Release Mitigation System. Designed to transport both liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and ammonia, the ships are slated for construction at HMD’s shipyard in Ulsan, South Korea, with expected deliveries by 2028. Panos Mitrou, LR’s Global Gas Segment Director, expressed pride in the collaborative project, highlighting LR’s commitment to supporting the maritime industry’s transition toward more sustainable energy solutions.

He noted the importance of technical expertise, safety evaluations, and regulatory leadership in facilitating the adoption of alternative fuels. Powered by low-carbon ammonia, the new vessels have the potential to substantially lower carbon emissions compared to traditional marine fuel systems. This development not only positions Trafigura as a leader in the low-emission tanker market but also sends a strong demand signal for the production of zero-carbon fuels and infrastructure. Andrea Olivi, Global Head of Shipping for Trafigura, emphasized the importance of EU regulations and the need for a unified global regulatory framework to drive decarbonization in the shipping industry.

Additionally, a joint development project began in December 2024 to analyze ammonia’s performance as a shipping fuel, involving collaboration among multiple organizations, including LR, Trafigura Maritime Logistics, and various Hyundai affiliates.
