MPA and CMA CGM Partner to Promote Sustainable Shipping and Advance Digital Innovation Efforts

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and CMA CGM Group have renewed their Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to promote sustainable shipping and innovation in the maritime sector. This renewed agreement builds upon the previous MoU established in 2022 and emphasizes the two parties’ commitment to reinforcing Singapore’s status as a leading maritime hub. The MoU was signed by Mr. Teo Eng Dih, Chief Executive of MPA, and Mr. Rodolphe Saadé, Chairman and CEO of CMA CGM Group.

Under this MoU, CMA CGM intends to expand its fleet and vessel tonnage by adding more vessels to the Singapore Registry of Ships, including four large LNG vessels. This strategy will not only bolster Singapore’s maritime framework but also aids CMA CGM in its ambition to achieve Net Zero Carbon emissions by 2050. The Group has already pledged nearly USD 20 billion toward ordering LNG and methanol-powered ships, with a goal of having 153 vessels capable of using low-carbon fuels by 2029.

To facilitate the transition toward sustainable fuels, CMA CGM plans to register and bunker alternative-fuel vessels under the Singapore flag and take part in various bunkering trials. In addition to the focus on sustainable fuels, the partnership will explore pilot projects, including the development of an online carbon accounting registry and sharing best practices for low-emission marine fuels. Efforts will also be made to establish data exchange standards between ships and shore while enhancing cybersecurity in maritime operations.

Moreover, this collaboration aims to strengthen Singapore’s maritime innovation ecosystem by connecting CMA CGM’s operations with local platforms. Workforce development initiatives will include training programs, internships, and scholarships in partnership with the Maritime Energy Training Facility, ensuring that local talent is prepared for industry changes. MPA and CMA CGM leaders highlighted this MoU as a vital step toward fostering a sustainable and innovative maritime landscape, demonstrating their shared commitment to decarbonisation, digitalisation, and workforce development.
