MPA and Wärtsilä Strengthen Collaboration for Accelerating Maritime Decarbonisation Efforts

Wärtsilä, a global leader in smart technologies for marine and energy markets, has announced a renewed partnership with the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA). This collaboration aims to accelerate maritime decarbonisation and digitalisation. A key component of this initiative is the introduction of the Methanol Power and Control (PAC) simulation model, which will be implemented in collaboration with the Maritime Energy Training Facility (METF) and Wavelink Maritime Institute.

This model will equip maritime professionals with essential skills to safely and efficiently operate methanol-powered vessels. Wavelink Maritime Institute will be the first MPA-accredited training partner to utilize the innovative model, with its launch scheduled for the Singapore Maritime Week (SMW) 2025. Further expanding this effort, Wärtsilä plans to introduce an Ammonia PAC simulation model in early 2026, enhancing the industry’s ability to manage ammonia-powered vessels.

In addition to the simulation models, MPA and Wärtsilä will work together within Singapore’s MarineTech ecosystem to explore various Research and Development projects. These projects aim to reduce the costs associated with adopting new technologies, including plume modelling for safety assessments and improvements in handling low- and zero-emission fuels. The partnership’s goal is to enhance safety protocols regarding the storage and operation of these fuels, ensuring that the industry is ready for new fuel technologies.

Moreover, as part of the initiative, the partners will identify the emerging skills required for operating methanol- and ammonia-powered engines. They will co-develop training curricula utilizing advanced technologies and simulation models to improve training effectiveness. To further these efforts, Wärtsilä will host a Simulation User Conference in June 2025, featuring experts discussing advancements in fuel training and simulation for the maritime industry.

Mr. Teo Eng Dih, Chief Executive of MPA, emphasized the importance of the partnership in transitioning to a multi-fuel future, while Håkan Agnevall, President and CEO of Wärtsilä, highlighted Singapore’s crucial role in the maritime sector’s journey towards net-zero emissions.
