Odfjell’s Initial Venture into Wind Energy: Installing Four bound4blue eSAILs® on BOW Olympus

Odfjell has made a significant step into wind propulsion with the installation of four bound4blue eSAILs® on the chemical tanker Bow Olympus. This 49,000 dwt vessel will utilize these 22-meter tall suction sails to achieve notable fuel savings and reduce its environmental impact, ultimately providing commercial and regulatory benefits as well. The installation process involved a tailored two-step approach to fit the busy schedule of the vessel. Initially, sail pedestals were installed during a planned drydocking, followed by the lifting of the eSAILs® at EDR Antwerp Shipyard.

The collaboration among Odfjell, bound4blue, and the shipyard ensured that the entire installation was completed efficiently in just two days. Odfjell selected bound4blue’s fully autonomous eSAILs® after a comprehensive evaluation of various wind propulsion systems by the research institute RISE. The performance efficiency of the eSAILs®, along with the non-ATEX options suitable for chemical tankers, were crucial factors in Odfjell’s decision-making process. David Ferrer, Co-founder and CTO of bound4blue, expressed excitement about supporting Odfjell’s commitment to wind propulsion technology, which offers an uncomplicated installation solution while minimizing costs.

The suction sails, which can be installed in a single shipyard visit, were fitted in two stages this time to accommodate operational needs. Odfjell’s adoption of wind power aligns with their ongoing strategy to minimize emissions, having already reduced their fleet’s carbon intensity by 53% since 2008. Erik Hjortland, VP Technology at Odfjell, noted that the data gathered from the eSAILs® will play an important role in informing future sustainability efforts. Wind propulsion systems also offer regulatory advantages, including benefits under the FuelEU Maritime initiative, making it an appealing option for shipowners like Odfjell.

With typical payback periods of under five years, eSAILs® are compatible with various vessel segments, enhancing their attractiveness for both new builds and retrofits across the industry.
