Elcome International has launched a new high-speed internet service, known as WELCOME, which is transforming how ship managers provide internet access at sea. Since its introduction in September 2024, the pay-as-you-go service has been utilized by over 30,000 seafarers. With data packs starting at just US$1.65 per gigabyte, WELCOME Maritime Wi-Fi allows crew members to access high-speed, low-latency internet without the burden of managing expensive network infrastructure or imposing restrictions on usage. Asneed Ameer, Elcome’s Senior Manager of Connectivity, highlighted the benefits of the service: “WELCOME is true broadband service at sea at very competitive prices.
Seafarers can purchase affordable data plans independently, ensuring constant communication with loved ones at costs comparable to roaming 4G data.”
The setup of the service is straightforward. Once Elcome’s plug-and-play hardware kit is installed, crew can connect to the WELCOME.online Wi-Fi hotspot, create an account, and select a suitable internet package. They receive an access code for multi-device use. Furthermore, crew members can monitor their data usage and retain any unused data when transferring between WELCOME-equipped vessels.
The service is capable of delivering bandwidth exceeding 2Gbps and can support up to 10,000 simultaneous Wi-Fi or LAN connections. This isolated internet service integrates seamlessly with existing ship communication systems while enhancing operational capabilities. Additionally, WELCOME mitigates cybersecurity risks and requires no capital expenditure for installation, which can be completed in under a day. Jimmy Grewal, Elcome’s Managing Director, emphasized that quality internet access is essential for crew welfare, stating it is directly linked to seafarer happiness.
Recent reports have indicated that connectivity issues have worsened, negatively impacting morale among seafarers. With upcoming amendments to the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) mandating reliable internet access to support mental health, WELCOME stands out as a vital solution for the maritime industry. Elcome is offering its WELCOME Pro kit, which includes essential equipment, at no charge for qualifying vessels. The service operates in international waters and territorial waters of over 120 countries, providing robust bandwidth and low latency.
Since its launch, more than 1,000 vessels have adopted WELCOME, with users averaging nearly 1 GB of data consumption daily.
