Seaspan enhances safety and efficiency by equipping 100 additional ships with Orca AI technology.

Seaspan Corporation is making significant strides in maritime technology by equipping an additional 100 ships with Orca AI’s SeaPod digital watchkeeper. This advancement is expected to enhance safety and improve operational efficiency across its fleet.

The integration of this innovative system is part of Seaspan’s broader digitalization strategy aimed at reinforcing its commitment to safety and cost-effectiveness in maritime operations. Initially deployed on a select number of vessels, the SeaPod digital watchkeeper has shown remarkable results.

A detailed analysis of Seaspan’s fleet performance during 2023-2024 indicated a 35% increase in the minimum average distance between vessels in open water and a 37% reduction in close encounters. These improvements point to a significant enhancement in situational awareness for navigation, enabling crew members to minimize unnecessary maneuvers and course changes.

The financial benefits of this technology are equally impressive. Seaspan has reported annual fuel savings of $100,000 per vessel, leading to a reduction of 500 metric tons of CO2 emissions per ship.

This aligns seamlessly with the company’s commitment to operational excellence and sustainability. Orca AI utilizes advanced computer vision to amalgamate data from Radar, AIS, and GPS, allowing for continuous monitoring of maritime conditions.

The SeaPod platform provides real-time alerts on high-risk targets, facilitating quick course adjustments and minimizing the likelihood of close-encounter incidents. Furthermore, Seaspan takes advantage of Orca AI’s FleetView dashboard to gain real-time insights into performance, ensuring regulatory compliance and promoting best practices.

Torsten Pedersen, Seaspan’s Chief Operating Officer, expressed pride in the collaboration with Orca AI, emphasizing the importance of leveraging technology for enhanced safety and sustainability. Yarden Gross, CEO of Orca AI, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the project’s role in demonstrating the transformative potential of AI in maritime operations.
