Wind propulsion is becoming increasingly significant in the shipping industry, marking a pivotal transition as shipowners start to adopt innovative solutions like BAR Technologies’ WindWings®. At the recent “Accelerating Digitalisation and Decarbonisation Conference” during Singapore Maritime Week, John Cooper, CEO of BAR Technologies, reported a marked rise in interest from shipowners looking to integrate this technology. Cooper highlighted that over the past year, the demand for WindWings®, a rigid sail technology that offers substantial fuel and emissions savings, has notably increased. On average, each wing can save about 1.5 tonnes of fuel and reduce CO2 emissions by 4.6 tonnes daily on regular global routes.
Bhuvnesh Dogra, Head of Technical for the Owners Union Maritime, joined Cooper on the panel. The Owners Union is collaborating with BAR Technologies to install WindWings® on up to 30 new vessels currently in production across eight different shipyards. Cooper expressed confidence in the burgeoning interest in wind propulsion, stating, “There’s no doubt wind has reached its tipping point.” He acknowledged the importance of collaboration with industry partners to expedite decarbonization efforts.
Dogra echoed this sentiment, noting that after evaluating various methods to control emissions, WindWings® stood out as a leading option for effective carbon reduction. During the discussion, concerns were raised regarding the capacity of shipyards to meet demand for WindWings®. Cooper reassured attendees that BAR Technologies is prepared to boost production, citing a partnership with China Merchants Energy Tech. This collaboration has positioned them to produce more than 50 units annually, with potential to scale even further.
Cooper also addressed supply chain concerns, concluding that their production capabilities can ensure timely delivery without compromising performance. He is committed to providing performance guarantees for their technology, instilling confidence in their clients regarding the efficiency and effectiveness of WindWings®.
