Singapore, recognized as the largest bunker hub globally for maritime vessels, has introduced a new standard specifically for methanol bunkering, according to the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA). This initiative is designed to support the growing infrastructure for methanol bunkering as the shipping industry seeks to adopt alternative fuels to replace traditional, environmentally harmful fuels. To guide this transition, MPA has published a new technical reference (TR129) that lays out a comprehensive framework for the safe and efficient utilization of methanol during bunkering operations.
This framework aims to ensure that the processes involved in methanol bunkering meet safety standards while promoting operational efficiency. Additionally, Singapore has achieved significant milestones in methanol bunkering. In July 2023, the country successfully conducted the world’s first ship-to-container methanol bunkering operation.
Following this, in May 2024, Singapore completed its first simultaneous methanol bunkering and cargo operation, demonstrating its capability to integrate methanol as a viable alternative fuel in the shipping industry. This proactive approach positions Singapore as a leader in the transition to greener fuel options, underscoring the country’s commitment to sustainable maritime practices. The introduction of the TR129 standard is a significant step in ensuring that this transition is not only safe but also adaptable to the evolving needs of the maritime sector.
