UGS Affirms Dedication to Europe’s Maritime Future in Discussion with Commissioner Tzitzikostas

The Union of Greek Shipowners (UGS) recently met with European Commissioner Tzitzikostas to reaffirm its commitment to the future of Europe’s maritime sector. Given the importance of EU shipping as a foundation for trade and economic prosperity, this meeting was timely amidst the European Commission’s efforts to enhance industrial competitiveness and develop new policy initiatives. During the discussions, the UGS emphasized the necessity for a balanced and effective global regulatory framework that acknowledges the inherently international nature of the shipping industry.

They advocated for a strategic and bespoke approach at the European level to protect the future of the sector, ensuring its continued contribution to the broader EU industrial strategy and economic stability. Ms. Melina Travlos highlighted the significance of Greek shipping, which constitutes 61% of the EU-controlled fleet. She pointed out that a vibrant shipping industry is essential for Europe’s global leadership and resilience.

However, she cautioned that this status should not be taken for granted, urging the EU to strive to uphold and strengthen its shipping sector against increasing global competition. The EU is encouraged to create an environment conducive to growth, innovation, and sustainability within the industry. Founded in 1916, the UGS represents Greek-owned and Greece-managed vessels exceeding 3,000 gross tons and operates under various flags.

As a prominent advocate for a competitive business landscape, the UGS supports free trade, regulatory consistency, maritime safety, and environmental sustainability. With headquarters in Piraeus and offices in Brussels and Washington D.C., the UGS collaborates closely with international and EU institutions. Their goal is to shape policies that bolster the competitiveness and sustainability of the shipping industry, affirming its role as a cornerstone of Europe’s economic strength and strategic resilience.
