Value Maritime (VM) has made a significant advancement in reducing CO2 emissions within the maritime industry by successfully installing its innovative Exhaust Gas Cleaning System (EGCS) and Carbon Capture unit aboard Nexus Victoria, an LR1 product tanker operated by Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL). This installation signifies a notable step toward sustainability in shipping and underscores MOL’s commitment to environmental stewardship. The 15MW next-generation EGCS Filtree system employed by VM effectively filters sulphur and fine particulate matter while capturing 10% of a vessel’s CO2 emissions, with the potential to scale up to 30% as needed.
With a deadweight tonnage (DWT) of 75,000, Nexus Victoria stands as the largest vessel equipped with VM’s SOx scrubber combined with advanced carbon capture technology. The installation was executed in Singapore under the expert guidance of VM’s technical team. Alican Kilinc, Operations Director at Value Maritime, expressed the significance of this milestone, emphasizing the company’s gratitude for MOL’s confidence in their technology. He pointed out that their partnership with one of the world’s leading shipowners motivates innovation and the development of effective emission-reducing solutions.
MOL is actively pursuing its “MOL Group Environmental Vision 2.2,” aiming for net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. This initiative aligns with their management plan, “BLUE ACTION 2035,” which places strong emphasis on environmental sustainability. Hiroyoshi Kubo, Executive Officer of MOL’s Tanker Unit, highlighted this system’s importance for vessels unable to transition to next-gen fuels. He reaffirmed the collaboration with Value Maritime in progressing carbon capture solutions.
VM’s Filtree system captures sulphur, CO2, and fine particulate matter from the exhaust. Its design facilitates onboard CO2 capture and storage, allowing captured CO2 to be utilized in various industries, including agriculture and food production. Looking ahead, Value Maritime aims to enhance its carbon logistics network and believes end-to-end carbon capture solutions are vital for achieving broader industry decarbonization. Christiaan Nijst, Co-founder of Value Group, stated that integrating maritime carbon capture with onshore utilization contributes to creating a sustainable shipping ecosystem.
