WISTA International Board Gathers in India for the First Time to Discuss Sustainable Shipping Initiatives

The Women’s International Shipping and Trading Association (WISTA) International Board is set to gather in India for its mid-term meeting for the first time in its history. This significant event showcases WISTA’s commitment to promoting diversity, inclusion, and leadership within the global maritime, trading, and logistics sectors. In celebration of this milestone, WISTA India will host its inaugural WISTA International EXCO Conference under the theme “Navigating Change: The Future of Sustainable Shipping” on April 9, 2024. The conference will address the key challenges and opportunities facing the maritime industry, especially in regards to enhancing environmental sustainability.

Professionals, leaders, and innovators from around the world will come together to discuss innovative strategies, exchange ideas, and collaborate on turning maritime operations into more environmentally friendly and resilient systems. Summiit Cheema Sharma, President of WISTA India, expressed her excitement about hosting the conference, stating that it is both an honor and a privilege. She highlighted India’s ongoing transition towards sustainable shipping, emphasizing the country’s exploration of renewable energy, alternative fuels, and other technologies aimed at reducing emissions. Furthermore, she noted that India plans to establish a Maritime Development Fund dedicated to supporting the production of green vessels and ports.

Elpi Petraki, President of WISTA International, recognized the importance of this gathering, pointing out how India serves as a vibrant hub for the maritime industry. Her remarks underscored the crucial contributions of women within the sector and affirmed WISTA’s commitment to championing diversity and inclusion globally. The upcoming conference aims not only to celebrate the essential role women play in the maritime field but also to carve out a path towards a more sustainable and inclusive industry.
