Helsingborg Port Enhances Digital Transformation with N4 System, Achieving 50% Reduction in Rehandles

The Port of Helsingborg, Sweden’s second-largest container terminal, is making significant strides in its digital transformation through the implementation of Kaleris’ N4 Terminal Operating System (TOS). This upgrade represents a critical aspect of the Port’s modernization initiatives, enhancing productivity, streamlining operational planning, minimizing bottlenecks, and improving overall terminal handling efficiency. As a key player in Northern Europe, the Port handles around 275,000 TEU by sea and 25,000 TEU by rail each year. The adoption of the N4 system signifies a major advancement in achieving the vision of the most modern container terminal in the Nordic region.

This goal is supported by optimizing current areas and investing in innovative technology that boosts capacity while promoting sustainability. Sanjin Redzepagic, CIO of the Port of Helsingborg, noted the previous static yard planning solution limited operational capability and reduced yard capacity. The transition to N4 has transformed the Port’s operational landscape. With N4, the terminal can dynamically adjust yard layouts and parameters, increasing capacity by up to 30 percent.

The Berth Window Management Vessel Planning feature has been instrumental in reducing container rehandles by 50 percent, leading to enhanced efficiency and lower fuel consumption. Additionally, the Port has observed an 8 percent increase in Gross Moves Per Hour (GMPH), attributed to N4’s advanced data analytics and reporting capabilities. This allows the team to analyze operational trends and continuously improve performance metrics. Recognizing the importance of solid partnerships during this transition, Sanjin emphasized the strong collaboration with Kaleris, paving the way for future advancements.

Molly Harrison, Chief Operating Officer at Kaleris, praised the teamwork that overcame challenges during implementation. Together, they have established a foundation for the Port of Helsingborg’s continued success, with a vision to become Sweden’s most efficient port by 2035.
