HEMEXPO spearheads design thinking in EU Horizon innovation project called SEASTARS.

HEMEXPO, a prominent association representing marine equipment manufacturers and exporters in the international shipping industry, has officially joined the EU HORIZON Innovation Action project titled “Sustainable Emission Abatement Strategies & Technologies for Advanced Revolution Ships” (SEASTARS). This innovative initiative has set ambitious targets, aiming for a minimum 30% reduction in well-to-wake greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 compared to 2008 levels, alongside a 20% improvement in energy efficiency against 2022 benchmarks. SEASTARS is not only focused on reducing emissions but also seeks to create a framework for global maritime decarbonization that aligns with the European Commission’s Fit-for-55 objectives.

As EU and global regulators introduce additional mandatory measures to promote maritime decarbonization, SEASTARS aims to equip shipowners with ready-to-implement solutions for both retrofitting existing vessels and for new shipbuilds across various sectors, including inland, short-sea, and high-seas operations. Utilizing Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE), the project supports flexible and modular decarbonization strategies that minimize investment risks while adhering to changing regulations. The SEASTARS project will incorporate advanced efficiency and emissions-reduction technologies such as hydrodynamic enhancements, cutting-edge machinery innovations, and alternative fuels and energy systems.

These include propeller-hull optimization, fuel cells, electric motors, biofuels, and carbon capture and storage. In its pivotal role within the consortium, HEMEXPO will spearhead design thinking workshops that aim to bridge the gap between technological advances and the practical needs of shipowners, builders, and maritime operators. These workshops will emphasize scalable solutions that facilitate a seamless transition to greener shipping practices.

Christos Papakis, Executive Director of HEMEXPO, emphasized that this initiative is a significant step toward making decarbonization solutions accessible, reinforcing HEMEXPO’s dedication to innovation and sustainability in the maritime sector.
