Elon Musk, the U.S. tech billionaire, expressed his desire for a future of zero tariffs between the United States and Europe during a video appearance at a conference in Florence, Italy. This statement comes shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump announced new tariffs on trading partners, including a 20% tariff on Italy and other European Union nations. Musk, who has been a vocal adviser to Trump and advocates for reducing unnecessary public spending, emphasized the need for improved trade relations. Musk articulated his vision of creating a free trade zone between Europe and North America.
He stated, “At the end of the day, I hope it’s agreed that both Europe and the United States should move ideally, in my view, to a zero tariff situation.” This ambition reflects Musk’s broader support for right-wing parties across Europe, as he seeks enhanced economic collaboration. During the discussion with Matteo Salvini, leader of Italy’s right-wing League Party, Musk also touched on his desire for increased freedom of movement for workers between Europe and the U.S. He asserted, “If people wish to work in Europe or wish to work in North America, they should be allowed to do so.”
Musk indicated that this perspective has been part of his advice to the President. Musk’s connections with Italian political figures like Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni of the Brothers of Italy party and Salvini highlight his alignment with their hard-right agenda, which focuses on law enforcement, tax reductions, and a stricter immigration policy. In light of Trump’s tariff announcement, Italy’s Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti called for a diplomatic approach to avoid retaliatory tariffs, suggesting an eagerness for dialogue with the U.S. Musk expressed appreciation to Salvini for advocating the adoption of his Starlink company for satellite technology in Italy.
