Neste and Eckerö Line Partner to Minimize Maritime Emissions in the Baltic Sea

Neste, a leading renewable fuel producer, and Eckerö Line, a Finnish ferry operator providing services between Helsinki and Tallinn, are continuing their partnership to lessen maritime emissions in the Baltic Sea. Eckerö Line has taken significant steps by becoming the first Finnish company to integrate Neste MY Renewable Diesel™ into its operations for commercial maritime transport. This initiative not only demonstrates a commitment to sustainability but also helps the company meet the upcoming 2% emissions reduction requirement mandated by the FuelEU Maritime regulation, which is set to take effect in early 2025. Neste MY Renewable Diesel is produced exclusively from waste and residual materials, resulting in a remarkable reduction of greenhouse gas emissions—averaging 90%—compared to conventional fossil diesel throughout its lifecycle.

Taru Keronen, CEO of Eckerö Line, emphasized the benefits of this renewable fuel: “Neste MY Renewable Diesel meets our needs well. We can use it as is in our existing fleet of ships operating in the Gulf of Finland to reduce our vessels’ greenhouse gas emissions.” One of the noteworthy advantages of Neste MY Renewable Diesel is its chemical similarity to fossil diesel. This allows it to be utilized in diesel-powered vessels without necessitating any modifications to current equipment or fuel distribution systems.

Joni Pihlström, VP of Marketing & Services at Neste, highlighted the urgency of addressing climate change. He noted, “It’s great that, as a partner, we can support the maritime sector’s transition towards lower-emission transport. Eckerö Line is setting a great example in this regard.” Overall, the collaboration between Neste and Eckerö Line showcases a proactive approach to fostering sustainability in maritime transport.
