Dualog Revolutionizes Maritime Email with Personalized Logins for Role-Based Mailboxes

Dualog has introduced an important upgrade to its email solution by providing individual corporate email accounts for all onboard personnel. This enhancement includes personal logins to role-based mailboxes along with multi-factor authentication (MFA).

According to Silje Moan, Dualog’s Chief Commercial Officer, this update allows each crew member to have a secure and standardized communication tool that promotes operational clarity and enhances their sense of belonging. With this new system, crew members can log in using MFA while still having access to traditional role-based addresses such as Master@.

However, access to these addresses is now limited to authorized personnel, and all activities are fully auditable via the Dualog portal. Moan emphasized that this update signifies Dualog’s dedication to improving customer security and compliance.

By introducing personal logins, the platform addresses significant security and compliance risks, making email access more traceable and manageable. Email remains a prominent entry point for cyber threats; it accounts for 98% of social engineering attacks according to Verizon’s latest Data Breach Investigations Report.

Maritime cyber incidents can cost over $550,000 on average. Microsoft reports that using MFA can reduce the likelihood of account compromise by 99.9%.

The recent improvements also help Dualog clients comply with stricter global regulations, such as the EU’s NIS2 directive, which imposes hefty fines for insufficient cybersecurity practices. Product Manager Mikael Johannessen mentioned that numerous vessels still rely on shared passwords, a flaw they seek to rectify by providing each seafarer with a secure digital identity.

The updated system has been developed in collaboration with IT experts from leading shipping companies, ensuring it aligns with real-world operational needs. Future updates, including Single Sign-On (SSO) functionality for fleet-wide identity management, are also on the horizon.

With these advancements, Dualog is paving the way for a new standard in maritime email, enhancing security, traceability, and crew empowerment.
