Union of Greek Shipowners President Melina Travlos Addresses Maritime Security at United Nations Event

In a momentous address, Melina Travlos, President of the Union of Greek Shipowners, discussed the critical issue of maritime security at a United Nations event chaired by Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. The briefing also featured insights from UN Secretary-General António Guterres and Professor Christian Bueger from the University of Copenhagen. President Travlos underscored the vital importance of maritime security, stating that “the security of our seas affects everyone, everywhere.” She emphasized the essential role of shipping in maintaining the global ecosystem and promoting human welfare, highlighting the urgent need to protect the industry against emerging threats. The participation of the Union of Greek Shipowners reflects Greece’s prominent position in global shipping, accounting for over 20% of the world fleet and more than 61% of the EU fleet.

Travlos described Greece as “a proud maritime nation, by identity and by history,” and outlined that approximately 110,000 ships operate globally, carrying 90% of international trade. These vessels facilitate the annual transport of over 12 billion tonnes of goods, which include food, medications, and consumer products. Additionally, nearly 2 million seafarers play a vital role in ensuring the world remains connected. However, Travlos cautioned that shipping is increasingly facing threats, including piracy, geopolitical instability, organized crime, and cyber warfare.

With piracy on the rise—116 incidents reported in 2024 alone—a comprehensive approach to maritime security is necessary. She urged the international community to prioritize maritime security and to include the industry’s expertise in addressing ongoing challenges. Concluding her address, Travlos called for collaboration and commitment among nations to protect freedom of navigation, framing it as a shared global responsibility essential for peace and human welfare.
