APM Terminals and CATL Collaborate to Propel Energy Transition in Terminal Operations – Reuters News

Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL), a leading innovator in new energy technologies, has formed a strategic partnership with APM Terminals to contribute to the energy transition within the global logistics sector. This collaboration was formalized through a cooperation agreement signed by Grant Morrison, APM Terminals’ head of global asset category management, and Akin Li, executive president of CATL’s overseas car business. The signing ceremony included notable witnesses from APM Terminals and CATL, highlighting the importance of the partnership.

Morrison expressed enthusiasm about the alignment with CATL, noting that this agreement supports APM Terminals’ goal of decarbonizing terminal operations through the adoption of battery-electric container handling equipment. The Aqaba Container Terminal in Jordan is an example of APM Terminals implementing battery-electric technology using CATL batteries. This pilot project aims to accelerate the adoption of such equipment, with both companies contributing to the Zero Emission Port Alliance, which focuses on reducing greenhouse gas emissions at terminals.

The collaboration will leverage CATL’s advanced energy solutions alongside APM Terminals’ extensive global network and expertise in supply chain management. Together, they aim to develop industry-leading battery-electric container handling solutions. CATL is expected to provide high-performance batteries and systems that promote electrification, aligning with the goals of the Zero Emission Port Alliance.

Looking towards the future, the partnership will encompass the entire battery lifecycle—from product development to after-sales support and recycling. CATL will offer best practices to help APM Terminals achieve its decarbonization targets, particularly in Scope 3 emissions. With a commitment to net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040, APM Terminals plans to utilize renewable energy sources and enhance operational efficiency.

APM Terminals and CATL’s collaboration aims to drive innovation and lead the logistics and terminal sector in reducing emissions globally.
