Auramarine Introduces Methanol Measurement Technology to Enhance Adoption of Alternative Fuels – Reuters AP Newsletter

Auramarine, a pioneering name in fuel supply systems for the marine and other sectors, has unveiled its new Auramarine Water Content Analyser (AM Water Content Analyser). This technology is designed to measure and report the levels of water in methanol, enabling ship operators to take preventative measures against associated risks and costs when utilizing this fuel. The introduction of this analyser aligns with the increasing adoption of methanol as a marine fuel in order to meet shipping’s decarbonization goals. Water is a common contaminant in methanol, which can enter the fuel supply accidentally or intentionally.

The presence of water reduces the calorific heating value of the fuel, leading to higher bunkering costs. If the water concentration exceeds safe levels, operators may be forced to offload the fuel, resulting in delays and additional expenses. To illustrate the significance of this technology, consider a scenario involving a Ro-Ro vessel that consumes 27,000 tons of green methanol annually, with an average price of €1,196 per ton. With a 5% concentration of water as a contaminant, the operator could potentially avoid losses of up to €1,614,600.

The AM Water Content Analyser is an inline measurement device that integrates seamlessly into the methanol process piping, such as the main bunker line, utilizing a sensor to accurately assess water concentration. John Bergman, CEO of Auramarine, emphasized the growing industry trend toward methanol usage due to its favorable greenhouse gas emissions reduction credentials. He stated that Auramarine has been at the forefront of developing solutions that facilitate the transition to alternative fuels, beginning with the industry’s first Methanol Fuel Supply Units in 2022. The AM Water Content Analyser empowers ship owners and operators to bunker methanol with greater confidence, enhancing their energy transition while also reducing costs.
