Experts Tackle Seafarers’ Mental and Sexual Wellbeing During Extended Voyages, Breaking a Longstanding Taboo.

Health experts at OneCare Group (OCG) are advocating for a much-needed conversation about the sexual health and emotional wellbeing of seafarers, acknowledging that these topics have traditionally been considered taboo. The unique conditions of the maritime profession, characterized by extended voyages with limited personal interaction, often lead to emotional challenges.

Issues such as sexual frustration and increased mental strain—manifesting in depression and aggressive behaviors—are prevalent among seafarers. Charles Watkins, founder and Clinical Psychologist at Marine Health Support Solutions (MHSS), highlights the detrimental effects of isolation on seafarers’ mental health.

He notes that unmet psychological and physiological needs can lead to significant emotional turmoil, turning a voyage into a struggle with stress and detachment. While fatigue and stress are often the primary focuses of mental health discussions at sea, the emotional impact of prolonged periods without intimacy frequently goes unaddressed.

Stella Kiss, a Psychologist at MHSS, emphasizes the stigma surrounding discussions of sexual frustration and emotional loneliness within the maritime sector. Many seafarers may fear judgement, which causes them to suppress these feelings and further internalize their stress.

Creating an open and supportive environment through awareness and dialogue is critical in addressing these issues. In addition to sexual frustration, the risk of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) is a concern for seafarers, particularly those with partners onshore or who engage with multiple partners during port visits.

Lack of transparency regarding chronic infections can lead to significant risks at sea. Dr. Jens Tülsner, CEO of Marine Medical Solutions, points out that privacy laws often prevent the sharing of critical health information, complicating the issue.

To combat these challenges, OneCare Group offers tailored training programs that cover STIs, safe sex practices, and address misconceptions about sexual health. These initiatives also take into account the specific needs of women and LGBTQ+ crew members, fostering a more inclusive approach to sexual health and mental wellbeing at sea.
