Kongsberg Maritime Unveils CEMS for Enhanced Emissions Compliance and Fuel Efficiency Solutions

Kongsberg Maritime has introduced its new Continuous Emissions Monitoring System (CEMS), designed to assist shipowners and operators in effectively monitoring and managing vessel emissions. This innovation ensures compliance with stricter environmental regulations while also improving fuel efficiency.

The CEMS utilizes state-of-the-art sensor technology for accurate and continuous measurement of critical greenhouse gases, including CO₂, CH₄, SOx, NOx, and CO. Unlike traditional methods that rely solely on fuel consumption data, this system provides a thorough and real-time assessment of exhaust emissions from all combustion sources, enabling more informed decision-making for decarbonization efforts.

Randi Østern, Senior Project Manager at Kongsberg Maritime, emphasizes the necessity for shipowners to keep pace with ever-tightening regulations, stating, “The key to future-proofing vessels is emissions monitoring, and Kongsberg CEMS delivers the reliable data from sensor to cloud that our clients demand.” CEMS is seamlessly integrated with Kongsberg Maritime’s K-Chief vessel automation system, facilitating automated emissions data processing through a unified interface.

This integration significantly reduces manual labor, minimizes the likelihood of errors, and enhances overall operational efficiency. The modular design of CEMS allows for easy installation on both existing vessels and new builds.

Moreover, the partnership with K-Chief provides remote diagnostic support under robust cybersecurity protocols. The real-time monitoring capabilities of Kongsberg CEMS additionally empower owners and operators to spot opportunities for operational enhancements and cost reductions.

The system also delivers timely maintenance alerts, ensuring the precision of emissions data and minimizing the risk of non-compliance. With the support of Kongsberg Maritime’s extensive global network, CEMS serves as a vital tool for shipowners striving to meet future environmental regulations and maintain the long-term competitiveness of their fleets.
