On June 25, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) will lead the global observance of the Day of the Seafarer. This day, established by the United Nations, aims to acknowledge the essential contributions seafarers make to global trade, security, and the transport of essential goods. The theme for this year, #MyHarassmentFreeShip, emphasizes the urgent need to eradicate bullying and harassment within the maritime sector, promoting an environment of dignity, safety, and inclusion on board all vessels. The campaign encourages a collaborative effort to create a maritime industry where every seafarer feels safe, valued, and treated with respect, creating ships that are free from harassment.
IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez stated, “Seafarers form a remarkable global workforce that calls ships their place of work…one that must be free from violence and harassment.” The campaign emphasizes the importance of collective action from all stakeholders to foster a zero-tolerance culture. The campaign aims to raise awareness about harassment at sea, encourage proactive policies, facilitate safe reporting mechanisms, and ensure that seafarers are equipped with the support and training to address such incidents. It is understood that creating a culture of respect is a shared responsibility that involves governments, shipping companies, training institutions, and the seafarers themselves.
To strengthen protections against harassment in maritime workplaces, the IMO has introduced amendments to the Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) Code. Starting January 1, 2026, mandatory training focused on preventing harassment, including sexual assault, will be required. Secretary-General Dominguez emphasized this amendment as a significant step toward systemic change through policy reform. In addition, a new initiative includes an Interactive World Map to help seafarers find reporting channels and support services, promoting access to help and enhancing transparency within the maritime industry.
