Celebrating Day of the Seafarer: Belgian Initiatives for Safe and Inclusive Work Environment at Sea

On the Day of the Seafarer, the Royal Belgian Shipowners’ Association (KBRV) aligns with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) 2025 theme, “My Harassment-Free Ship.” This initiative emphasizes the need to cultivate a safe, respectful, and inclusive working environment for all seafarers. Promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion, particularly through empowering women and marginalized groups, is crucial for the maritime industry’s long-term vitality. Together with its members, regulators, and educational institutions, KBRV is dedicated to improving working conditions onboard for every seafarer, while also advocating for safety irrespective of gender, nationality, or background.

As part of KBRV’s ongoing video series on ‘Belgian Maritime Thought Leadership,’ various interviews offer insights into collaborative efforts with Belgian maritime authorities and the Antwerp Maritime Academy. These initiatives aim to motivate women to pursue careers at sea and to support LGBTQIA+ seafarers in achieving a harassment-free workplace. Valérie Gregoir, Crewing Manager at CMB.TECH, stresses the importance of seafaring, noting the unique challenges of working closely with a small team.

Meanwhile, EXMAR Ship Management’s team, including Crewing Operations Manager Elke Stoffelen and CPT Simon Rogier, highlights their grievance committee, which improves communication between ship and shore, ensuring complaints are appropriately managed through a diverse and neutral framework. The Antwerp Maritime Academy (AMA) is recognized for integrating bullying and harassment issues into its curriculum. By collaborating with various experts in psychology and maritime operations, AMA prepares students like Tom Roose to address real-life incidents effectively.

Additionally, Boskalis has implemented a mentoring system for its female seafarers, pairing newcomers with experienced mentors to provide guidance and foster a supportive atmosphere. At a policy level, Belgium is advocating for more diversity within the maritime industry, recognizing that initiatives for underrepresented groups are essential. Anyès Nauwelaerts from Belgium’s Directorate-General for Shipping emphasizes the importance of creating an inclusive environment in the maritime profession.

KBRV Managing Director Wilfried Lemmens concludes, “The Day of the Seafarer celebrates all seafarers while showing that Belgian shipowners are committed to addressing issues of bullying and discrimination seriously.”
