Inmarsat Maritime, now part of Viasat, has reported a remarkable surge in orders for its NexusWave service, surpassing 1,000 vessels within just six months of its launch. This fully managed connectivity solution is gaining popularity amidst the shipping industry’s increasing demand for high-speed internet. By leveraging multiple networks while providing the convenience of a single provider, NexusWave stands out in the market.
Prominent early adopters such as “K” Line, Anthony Veder, and Mitsui O.S.K. Lines have already begun transforming their ships into fully-equipped floating offices and homes. NexusWave integrates Global Xpress (GX) Ka-band, low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites, coastal LTE, and resilient L-band services into a cohesive solution.
Its innovative ‘network-bonding’ technology allows vessels to use the combined speed and capacity of all available networks simultaneously, ensuring optimal performance. Recent testing has shown that NexusWave can achieve impressive download speeds of up to 340 Mbps and upload speeds of 80 Mbps, with network availability consistently exceeding 99.9%. The service ensures high-quality video calls that remain unaffected by any single network’s performance, as it smartly adjusts traffic routing to maintain seamless connectivity.
This service also provides users with unlimited data and global coverage, while its secure-by-design architecture enhances overall cybersecurity. For seafarers, this means access to essential applications including web browsing, streaming, and social media, creating a more connected and home-like experience at sea. Ben Palmer, President of Inmarsat Maritime, expressed pride in reaching this milestone, emphasizing that it reflects the dedication of the development team and the industry’s strong demand for advanced connectivity.
He highlighted how NexusWave supports shipowners in executing their digitalization strategies and enhancing crew welfare, all while simplifying their connectivity needs with a single trusted partner.
