MOL Successfully Installs Biofuel Bunkering on Capesize Bulk Carrier for BHP Operations

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. has successfully completed its first biofuel bunkering on the capesize bulk carrier, MIDNIGHT DREAM. The operation took place in March 2025 in Singapore, where the vessel was supplied with approximately 1,000 tons of biodiesel-blended marine fuel.

This significant milestone comes as part of MOL’s collaboration with BHP Group Ltd, marking a crucial step toward the utilization of biofuels in maritime operations. The biofuel used in this instance is a blend of 24% biodiesel (B24) with Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oil (VLSFO). This composition is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 750 tons.

The biofuel is derived from organic materials such as agricultural residues and waste cooking oil, presenting a more environmentally friendly option compared to traditional fossil fuels. Biofuels are recognized as a viable alternative to fossil fuels due to their potential for lower carbon emissions. Additionally, they can be used without modifications in existing marine diesel engines and bunkering infrastructure, facilitating a seamless transition to cleaner energy sources.

MOL is committed to promoting the adoption of alternative fuels as part of its environmental initiatives under the BLUE ACTION 2035 management plan, which focuses on reducing greenhouse gas emissions in ocean transport. The MIDNIGHT DREAM has impressive specifications, measuring 292 meters in length, 45 meters in breadth, and a draft of 18 meters, with a deadweight tonnage of 180,517 tons. Through these efforts, MOL aims to lead the way in sustainable shipping practices and contribute to a more sustainable future for the maritime industry.
