Japan: An Iceberg of Experience

When Torvald Klaveness opened its Tokyo office in April 2024, the goal was to enhance its presence in Japan’s complex shipping market while leveraging Klaveness’ freight and digital capabilities. One year later, General Manager Haruki Chua reflects on the company’s progress and future aspirations. Chua emphasizes the importance of building solid commercial relationships in this unique market. The company has maintained cargo volumes with existing clients while also engaging new customers, especially in the grain and petcoke sectors.

He explains that a significant part of their focus has been on raising awareness about Klaveness’ diverse offerings, from independent decision-making to long-term asset management solutions. What distinguishes Klaveness, according to Chua, is not just the range of services but their tailored application. The approach is focused on understanding individual client needs to maximize profitability for shipowners and enhance freight management for charterers. The company prioritizes adding real value beyond merely transporting cargo.

Despite challenges in Kamsarmax newbuilding projects, Chua believes that groundwork has been laid for future opportunities. They have also made strides in digital initiatives, including the onboarding of a new client to their ‘Freight Optimizer’ tool, a SaaS solution aimed at enhancing freight decisions. Reflecting on the Japanese shipping market, Chua notes that successful engagement requires patience, relationship-building, and face-to-face communication. He highlights a shift in perceptions regarding digitalization, with an increasing openness to new solutions that can complement traditional practices.

Klaveness has a long-standing presence in Japan, fostering trust through years of partnership with entities like the Marubeni Corporation. The company is actively involved in the Norwegian Chamber of Commerce in Japan, helping to strengthen its ties within the industry. Looking ahead, Chua plans to expand the Tokyo office in response to increasing activities and strengthen relationships with both existing and new partners. The focus remains on developing innovative business models and making a lasting impact in the shipping industry.
