Hapag-Lloyd has released preliminary business figures for the first quarter of 2025, which show a significant increase in performance compared to the previous year. The Group’s EBITDA rose by 17%, reaching USD 1.1 billion (EUR 1.0 billion).
Additionally, EBIT saw a 24% improvement, totaling USD 0.5 billion (EUR 0.5 billion). This positive growth is attributed to a transport volume of 3.3 million TEU and an average freight rate of USD 1,480 per TEU, both of which reflect a 9% increase from the same quarter in 2024 as a result of strong market demand.
Despite this strong start to 2025, Rolf Habben Jansen, CEO of Hapag-Lloyd AG, cautioned that the current market environment is fraught with uncertainties. The company maintains its expectation of lower overall results for the year.
Habben Jansen emphasized the strategic initiatives being implemented, including the rigorous application of their Strategy 2030, the launch of the Gemini Cooperation to enhance customer service, and the expansion of Hanseatic Global Terminals. The company also aims to improve fleet efficiency and continue its decarbonization efforts while focusing on cost management and digitalization.
Looking ahead to the financial year 2025, the Executive Board estimates that Group EBITDA will be between USD 2.5 to 4.0 billion (EUR 2.4 to 3.9 billion), and Group EBIT is projected to range from USD 0.0 to 1.5 billion (EUR 0.0 to 1.5 billion). These forecasts remain uncertain due to fluctuating freight rates and geopolitical challenges, particularly concerning tensions in the Red Sea and global trade conflicts that may impact supply and demand in container shipping and the financial performance of Hapag-Lloyd.
During the upcoming Annual General Meeting, Habben Jansen will elaborate on the financial results of 2024 and share insights regarding the outlook for 2025. After the meeting, the detailed speech will be made available to shareholders.
