Trust in the European Union and its institutions has reached its highest level since 2007, according to a recent Eurobarometer poll by the European Commission. The report indicates that 52% of Europeans express confidence in the EU, marking a notable increase, particularly among young individuals aged 15 to 24, who demonstrate a trust level of 59%. In contrast, only 36% of respondents reported trust in their national governments. The findings come amidst significant geopolitical tensions, particularly between the EU and the United States, compounded by recent trade policy developments involving U.S. President Donald Trump.
Although Trump was not mentioned directly in the survey questions, his administration’s decisions are undoubtedly influencing public sentiment. The poll was conducted from March 26 to April 22 and included face-to-face interviews with over 26,000 participants across all 27 EU member states. Support for the euro has also reached an unprecedented 74% among EU citizens, with even higher backing at 83% within euro zone countries. Nevertheless, opinions about the current economic conditions in Europe remain mixed.
While 44% of respondents describe the economy as good, 48% have a more negative perception. Interestingly, 43% of participants expect economic conditions to stabilize over the coming year. The survey also highlights strong endorsement for deeper EU integration, particularly in security and defense. A striking 81% of respondents support a unified policy among member states, the highest since 2004.
This sentiment is underscored by the EU’s recent approval of a substantial arms fund, driven by concerns over potential Russian aggression. Moreover, 77% of respondents view Russia’s invasion of Ukraine as a significant threat to EU security, with 72% supporting economic sanctions against Russia. Eurobarometer noted that the situation in Ukraine remains the top issue for the EU.
