Black Carbon and Arctic Scrubbers: Clean Arctic Alliance Updates for IMO PPR 12 Shipping Conference

The upcoming meeting of the International Maritime Organization’s Pollution Prevention and Response sub-committee (PPR 12), scheduled for January 27-31, 2025, is expected to address crucial environmental issues regarding maritime operations in the Arctic. An online briefing has been organized to provide stakeholders with valuable insights into the agenda, potential discussions, and likely outcomes that may impact shipping practices in the region. A primary focus will be on reducing black carbon emissions, which have significant implications for climate change and the Arctic environment. Bill Hemmings, a Black Carbon Advisor, will discuss strategies for minimizing these emissions from ships operating in Arctic waters.

Another important topic will be the use of exhaust gas cleaning systems, commonly known as scrubbers. Eelco Leemans, a Technical Advisor, will present arguments for prohibiting the use of these systems due to their potential impact on water quality and marine life. The discussions aim to foster a better understanding of the environmental implications of scrubbers and the necessity for stricter regulations. Sian Prior will serve as the moderator for this briefing, guiding the conversation and ensuring that key points are effectively communicated.

The insights shared during this session are designed to prepare participants for the challenges and regulatory changes anticipated in the shipping industry, particularly in relation to environmental sustainability in the Arctic region. This briefing by the Clean Arctic Alliance aims to empower stakeholders with the knowledge they need for effective engagement in the upcoming PPR 12 meeting, highlighting the critical need for collective action in protecting the fragile Arctic environment.
